Farm to Table Week

The BHS FFA chapter has enjoyed celebrating Virginia's Farm to School week.  Every day, we have asked questions on the announcements.  The daily winner receives a $10 gift card to the Co-Op.  To cap off the week, BHS FFA Officer's helped local farmers serve lunch to the students of BHS.  This was an awesome opportunity to connect with local farmers and the origin of their food.  We wish every day could be Farm to School day!!

National FFA Convention

National FFA Convention & Expo is always a highlight of the year for our chapters.  While at convention this year, the Broadway FFA participated in numerous events and activities.  We took a steam boat cruise down the Ohio River, attended sessions, connected with agricultural businesses at the career fair, gained leadership skills at workshops and enjoyed getting to know Louisville with various tours.  We even got to meet Josh Sundquist, an inspiring and hilarious speaker, who is also an amputee and Harrisonburg High School graduate.  Check out his website at:  http://joshsundquist.com

Every year, we also participate in the National Days of Service that is sponsored by CSX.  We were honored to be able to partner with National Safe Place and Dignity U Wear to help package clothing to be delivered to homeless and run away teens.  This was an amazing experience for everyone involved and was by far the best Days of Service that we have ever participated in!!  Learn more about National Safe Place at:  http://nationalsafeplace.org

Canning Applesauce

Another project of the Ag Business class after their field trip to Showalter's was to can some of the apples that we purchased.  We made applesauce.  The students learned to can along with safety aspects behind canning and why it works to preserve food.  Even more exciting, all of our jars sealed!

PALS

The Ag Business class makes a monthly visit to Fulks Run Elementary School where they participate in PALS (Partners in Active Learning Support).  The high schoolers are paired with a 3rd or 4th grader. During our visits, we assist them with homework and plan fun activities that are related to agriculture.  This month, we picked pumpkins & apples during our Showalter's Orchard field trip and then took them to our PALS to paint and decorate.  We look forward to our visit next month!

Ag Business Field Trip

To encourage the exploration of local agricultural businesses, the Ag Business class visited Showalter's Orchard and Greenhouse.  They got a first hand look at the day-to-day operations as well as information on the business, the licensure requirements and the need to expand and change.  The students also helped with the preparations for Showalter's annual apple festival.  They can't wait to go back!  Thanks so much for allowing us to come visit :)

Despite a rainy day, the BHS Homecoming Parade went on!  We were excited to be a part of it even though everyone ended up soaked :)

Small Engines

After learning about one of the systems of the small engines, the class is excited to finally be able to start the disassembly process.  The students will learn about the various other systems and then disassemble them.
